Time
One reason many people give for not exercising is time. Work, children, family, studies come first-then the day’s gone. While finding the time to exercise can be hard, doing it may help you with other activities by increasing your energy levels and lowering your stress levels.

  •  Over 2 weeks plan a time each day for exercise. Stick to it, start slow and build gradually…this could just be 5 minutes in your day.

Motivation
Some people see exercise as too much work. You may have tried it, but it didn’t work out or you keep putting it off till tomorrow. Others’ start exercise plans only to quit them. This is a catch 22. The less you do the less you want to do, even though you know you should do it.

  •  You aren’t alone. Sometimes motivation comes from simply doing the activity, so don’t over think it, don’t give your mind the chance to talk you out of it. Plan it now and do it today, focus on this moment in time.
  •  Exercise needs to suit your interests and lifestyle. The gym may not be for you, but walking, cycling or swimming might be. Try it out and build it up slowly, stick to it and it may lead to bigger things. On your own, with friends or family.

Cost
Many people think you have to buy expensive fitness equipment or shell out for gym memberships. You don’t.

  •  Walking, running, hiking, swimming, you tube workouts are cheap ways to exercise.

Change
Change can be tough. But with some key ingredients, like motivation, opportunity and support, it’s totally achievable. Sometimes big things come from one small thing you change. So it’s a challenge worth taking on.

  • We’ll talk about models of change (in my next blog) which can help you think about how and when you’re ready to change.

These things don’t need to stop you getting healthy, in shape and getting the positive mental health and physical benefits of exercise. Integrating exercise into your life is your lifestyle choice. Good luck!

  • So, what’s the best thing that could happen if you start to exercise?
  • What small step can you take today to make a change? it doesn’t need to be big!
